Summer of 2008

The cold and rainy summer has brought out the bears. Several attacks have occurred in Alaska this year. We have had an unusual number of encounters.

This grizzly chased away the fishermen on the other shore. I was somewhat amused until it swam across and sent me back to the car.

The trail we wanted heads into the woods by the signs. A grizzly is between us and the trail. After watching the bear disappear into the woods near the trail, we turned back and took the long way along the rocky beach.

Photography is not the priority, but after hearing a loud woofing sound, we noticed this black bear behind some small trees.

The bear began to walk away while keeping an eye on us and making grunting and barking sounds.

In response to our movement, the bear turned back to face us. We backed away and it ran off.

This is the preferred way to encounter a bear, from a long way off. This black bear in Cordova had triplets that stayed mostly hidden in the tall grass.
