Carlos
Carlos may be the most unremarkable Mexican restaurant in Anchorage. It was so unremarkable, I really procrastinated in writing this review, so bear with me.
Carlos is off of Old Seward south of O’Malley, down near where we put a bid on a new construction condo earlier in the summer. This would have been our closest Mexican restaurant, and frankly, it would have been a bad ‘home base’ restaurant.
The building and the service were fine. Carlos is in a stand alone, Mexican-styled building, with a typical Mexican restaurant style interior. Our waiter was friendly and effective.
I don’t remember the chips and salsa, sorry to say. They were unremarkable, but don’t stand out as bad.
The margaritas were bland. Incredibly bland. I don’t know how they managed this.
The food was fine. I had spinach enchiladas, which I found to be just average. Tim ordered some typical Mexican offering and also found it average. The menu itself I found disappointing, particularly their lack of a la carte options. Al a carte consisted solely of ordering an entrée ‘set’ without the rice and beans. For example, you could not order just a taco, but could order tacos. Strange.
I hate to be too negative; other than the margarits (blech!) there was nothing glaringly wrong with the place. But, the margarita is a big part of the experience to me, and nothing else about the place could counter balance that big negative.
