Childs Glacier Calves into the Copper River

July 15, 2008

The view of the glacier from the opposite shore of the river. The glacier's face is about 300 feet high and about a quarter mile away

Some small pieces cascade down the face

And splash water over a hundred feet into the air

Sometimes the water splashed straight up and sometimes it exploded outward.

The glacier made incredible noises before dropping a massive section. The before and after pictures show how much fell. The after picture includes the wave making its way across the river.

While the photographer missed focus, this sequence really demonstrates the awesome power

A massive wave heads out into the river
