The Unknown Mexican Restaurant in Downtown Anchorage.
OK, I know this restaurant is on 4th. And, it’s east of the ‘Once in a Blue Moose’ gift shop. East of that yellow Ship Creek shops thing, I think. North side of the street. But, for the life of me, I can’t remember its name, and I can’t find anything promising in the phone book. In fact, when Tim and I decided to go eat here, we just went based on remembering it was there. I TRIED to remember the name once I arrived, but, the margaritas must have done me in. So, here it is – ‘the-unknown-Mexican-restaurant-in-downtown-Anchorage’
This is another case of procrastination in my writing of restaurant reviews. However, this place was really top notch. Located downtown, it has indoor and outdoor seating. The indoors is a little plain for a Mexican place, and the bar canopy is incongruously decorated with unrelated stuffed animals, stuffed superheroes, and other bizarre plush toys. A large TV blares what appears to be a Spanish language spin-off of MTV.
Our waiter was friendly, although he had a bit of trouble with English. Actually, he would have had a little trouble with Spanish, too, I think. He seemed perhaps Russian.
Margaritas were yummy; I believe I indulged and had two. This may explain why I really can’t remember the chips and salsa. That means they were probably fine, but not outstanding. I do think they were the crispier, thinner equilateral triangles, and not the thick chips in the skinny triangle shape.
My meal was delicious. It consisted of wonderfully seasoned thin pieces of steak, a cheese enchilada, and rice and beans. The rice had large chunks of various vegetables in it; not an extraordinary amount, but enough to notice, and I thought pretty tasty. I’m sure Tim doesn’t remember what he had (it’s been a while since we were there), but as I recall he was happy with his selection.
I’d go back, if I were downtown again. If I can find it. (I think I can!)
